This editorial examines the role of nursing leadership in ensuring the sustainability of health systems and addresses key challenges such as workforce shortages, excessive workloads and inequalities in access to care. It highlights the need to invest in education, employment, professional well-being and advanced skills development, particularly in mental health nursing. It also calls for greater nurse participation in decision-making and health policy development to promote more equitable, effective and person-centred care.
