Abstract

Objectives: To examine the role of nurses in the management of psychotic symptoms.

Materials and methods: A comprehensive literature review of primary and secondary sources was conducted between February and April 2021. PubMed, Scopus, LILACS, and CUIDEN were searched, and documents published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese were selected.

Results: The identification of psychotic symptoms is based on observing behavioural signs such as talking to oneself or unprovoked laughter, among others. Several assessment methods are available, with the clinical interview being particularly important. The interventions associated with the best long-term outcomes are combined approaches involving antipsychotic medication, psychological treatment, nursing care, and psychoeducation. Nursing management begins with the establishment of a strong therapeutic relationship, which usually requires more time than usual. Psychosocial care is based mainly on behaviour modification techniques and aims to improve functioning, well-being, and quality of life.

Discussion: Psychotic symptoms occur in a range of mental disorders and medical conditions and affect both patients and their families. Nursing interventions should be comprehensive, combining pharmacological and psychological therapies while prioritising patient well-being. Behaviour modification strategies are particularly useful for negative symptoms and require an interdisciplinary approach.

Recommendations: Nurses play a fundamental role in the management of psychotic symptoms, as they are central members of the multidisciplinary team.

Keywords: psychotic symptoms, psychosis, nursing care.
