Abstract

Introduction: neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a potentially fatal neurological emergency, idiosyncratically associated with the use of antipsychotic agents. It is characterized by a distinctive tetrad, which includes a change in mental status, muscle rigidity, fever and dysautonomia, requiring a high clinical suspicion for diagnosis and treatment. Objective: to learn about the nursing care needed to provide quality intervention. Material and methods: a literature review was carried out in the main databases: PubMed/Medline and CINAHL. Results: the immediate introduction of measures is fundamental, including among them the discontinuation of the antipsychotic and basic supportive measures, together with pharmacological therapy and/or electroconvulsive therapy according to the patient’s state. Discussion: rapid multidisciplinary action and the use of action protocols are key to being able to offer quality care.
