Abstract

Schizophrenia is a chronic psychotic disorder and one of the leading causes of disability, associated with a life expectancy 10 to 12 years shorter than that of the general population, which makes the control of modifiable risk factors in geriatric centres relevant. We present the case of a 76-year-old man with paranoid schizophrenia diagnosed at the age of 20, with a borderline intellectual quotient, institutionalized from an early age and legally incapacitated, who presents progressive cognitive impairment, chronic delusional ideation, isolation, low self-esteem and exhibitionist behaviour, with notable psychopathological stability and no acute decompensations. After assessment according to Marjory Gordon’s functional health patterns, a care plan was developed with the NANDA, NOC and NIC taxonomies that addressed the deficit of recreational activities, the risk of constipation, insomnia, the self-care deficit in bathing/hygiene, impaired verbal communication, situational low self-esteem and social isolation. The plan is aimed at reinforcing personal autonomy, basic care and inclusion in cognitive rehabilitation and geronto-gymnastics groups.
